Current Situation and Future Development Trend of Biological Fermentation Industry

On April 21, at the Fifth Symposium on the Application and Trend Development of New Organic Nitrogen Sources held in Liuzhou, Guangxi, Li Xiaoyan, vice chairman of the China Biological Fermentation Industry Association, attended the meeting and made a report entitled: the current situation and future development trend of the biological fermentation industry.

Li Xiaoyan first introduced the current situation of the development of China's biological fermentation industry. The scale of the entire fermentation industry continued to expand. The output of major biological fermentation products increased from 18 million tons in 2010 to 26.29 million tons in 2016, and the total annual output value increased from 200 billion yuan to more than 300 billion yuan.

At present, the total amount of products in China's biological fermentation industry ranks first in the world, and it has become a veritable fermentation country. Exports of major fermentation products grew by 18.6 percent in 2016, the highest growth rate in recent years.

Under the guidance of the national industrial policy, the biological fermentation industry is guided by meeting market demand, actively promoting structural adjustment and industrial upgrading, changing the original pattern of relatively single products, and has gradually formed an industrial pattern of coordinated development of multiple products. The independent innovation ability of the main fermentation products has been enhanced, and the production technology level has been significantly improved. The production technology of citric acid, monosodium glutamate, sorbitol, yeast and other products has reached the international advanced level.

The bio-fermentation industry has experienced fierce market competition, mergers and reorganizations, thus further enhancing the degree of industrial concentration. At present, there are 5 large enterprise groups with an annual output value of more than 10 billion yuan. The quality and safety level of fermentation products have been continuously improved, and product standards have been in line with international standards. The level of comprehensive utilization of fermented resources has been gradually improved, and remarkable achievements have been made in energy conservation and emission reduction.

Then Li Xiaoyan introduced the main problems and constraints faced by the industry. This is mainly manifested in: the contradiction between market demand and production capacity is prominent, the industry is large but not strong; the level of core technology and equipment needs to be improved; product approval and standards lag to restrict the development of the industry; the cost of production factors such as raw materials and environmental protection has increased, increasing the pressure on enterprise development.

The 13th Five-Year Plan period is a turning point in the development of the biological fermentation industry, the growth rate has dropped significantly, and the industry has entered a new normal stage of deep adjustment. In order to meet the challenges, Li Xiaoyan focused on the key work of future development. Li Xiaoyan pointed out that it is necessary to strengthen independent innovation, master core technologies, extend the industrial chain, develop high-end products, cultivate new growth points, and form new competitive advantages. Improve the standardization system to help enterprises achieve new growth advantages. Promote clean production and strengthen industrial environmental protection.

Finally, Li Xiaoyan said: At present, although the biological fermentation industry is in a period of in-depth adjustment, the biological fermentation industry is part of a strategic emerging industry and is closely related to the food industry with rigid demand. Therefore, it will continue to maintain a high demand in the future. The elasticity coefficient is large, the market demand is large, and the development space is large. Industry members should strengthen their confidence, meet challenges, focus on improving the quality and efficiency of development, speed up supply-side structural adjustment, and rely on scientific and technological progress and scientific and technological innovation to contribute to the realization of China's dream of becoming a strong country in the biological fermentation industry.
